Hello, designers!
In an effort to put myself out there and make sense of this time of post graduation during COVID-19, I've decided to share my thoughts in blog format. No one asked for it, but I'm doing it anyway!
Some posts sitting in my drafts right now include:
Lessons from Adobe Anime that Apply to Life
The Cons (and Pros!) of Graduating During a Pandemic
What I Would Say to Myself About Entering Design School
Contending with Being an Industrial Designer and Anti-Consumerist
a series of posts dubbed "Gema Goes to Things So You Don't Have To," in which I attend panels and events and offer some key takeaways from them
Who is this for?
Myself, mostly - I have a lot of thoughts! But I like to think that this is for anyone who is finding their way in the design world. I can't promise that my writing will offer you any real help (because that's just the blind leading the blind), but maybe you'll be able to relate.
Why do I care?
You don't have to. I'm only one unemployed college grad out of many, and I'm not even that great at writing. I just want to offer my perspective to show others that you are not alone. The design world is intimidating, but you don't have to face it by yourself. And in a way, I'm trying to prove this to myself by making this blog.
How often will you post?
That, like the rest of the world's future, is uncertain. As you know I have several posts in the works, but it's hard to say how long or how often I'll write. For the sake of consistency and keeping myself accountable, let's say once a week (after graduation - I'm currently in the middle of final project submissions).
Why is your portfolio unfinished?
Don't worry about it. I'll have plenty of time for that now.
Can I offer some feedback (or a job offer)?
Sure! E-mail me at gemaelamae.design@gmail.com. I'll accept any job offer.
All jokes and self-deprecating humour aside, graduating is tough. Finding a job is tough. Dealing with a pandemic? Nearly insurmountable, but not impossible. This blog is to help me make sense of it all, and I would love if it can help you do so, too.
- Gema
